Today, on Indigenous People’s Day, we’re asking what does LANDBACK mean to you?⁠ ⁠ “LANDBACK to me is a connection,” writes For Freedoms artist jun mabuchi in our forthcoming book, Where Do We Go From Here? “Rethinking your relationship not only to the land but to animals, spirits, to each other, to yourself, your ancestors, and future generations. We hoped these billboards would ignite ripple effects of such meaningful and productive conversation. Personally, this project also encouraged me to look into the painful history of my home, Japan, and its genocide and assimilation of Ainu people in Ainu Moshiri (Hokkaido) and Ryukyuans in Ryukyu Kingdom (Okinawa) to mainland Japan.
