#GeniusLoci has arrived in West Palm Beach!
Debuting this weekend in conjunction with newwaveartwknd, a new public artwork by artist nekishadurrett celebrates The Styx, a historically Black neighborhood in Palm Beach, Florida, and its legendary music venue The Sunset Lounge, known as the “Cotton Club of the South.”
Inspired by the form of a gramophone and the numerous Black performers who performed at the Lounge, the sculpture symbolizes the physical manifestation of music, as well as amplifying voices that have been systematically marginalized by history.
“There is history within the very earth of this location,” says Durrett, who selected Heart & Soul Park as the home of “Genius Loci” (meaning “spirit of a place”) in tribute to the Black community in Palm Beach that was burned to the ground in 1910. For Durrett, the work is an invitation to park visitors to ponder what voices of Palm Beach Black history would be amplified from the spirit of this place.
