THE SPIRITS ARE LAUGHING As a Cherokee and member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, artist Jeffrey Gibson (jeffrune)’s use of the phrase “The Spirits Are Laughing” evolves out of conversations around Indigenous kinship philosophy—the idea of seeing the land as an extension of one’s own family or oneself, and prioritizes looking at everything in our surroundings as an equal living entity. This billboard by #JeffreyGibson has been installed in Los Angeles, CA in partnership with silkroadproject’s American Railroad tour, illuminating the legacy of American Imperialism and the impact Black, Chinese, Indigenous, Irish, and other immigrant communities had on the creation of the U.S. Transcontinental Railroad and connecting railways in North America.
