According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a
#servicedog is a dog that has been individually trained to perform work or tasks to assist a person with a disability.
Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack or performing other duties.
There are other types of working dogs that aren’t service dogs:
🏫 Facility dogs are highly trained in specific tasks to assist professionals working in healthcare, rehabilitation, criminal justice or education settings. However, facility dogs aren’t permitted in public except in the facility where they work to improve client outcomes.
