For the first time in a production 911, the Carrera 4 introduced all-wheel drive, a system heavily influenced by the innovative 959 supercar. While retaining the iconic 911 silhouette, the 964 was subtly modernized with smoother integrated bumpers, revised exterior mirrors, and aerodynamic enhancements. It was also the first 911 to feature power steering and anti-lock brakes as standard, along with a 3.6-liter flat-six engine producing 247bhp.
