"Everyday items" would be exempt from the state sales tax under three bills Iowa House lawmakers moved forward Wednesday in an effort to curb expenses crunching Iowans' pocketbooks.
Laundry soap and detergent, toilet paper and vitamins and minerals wouldn't be subject to the sales tax under House File 963, House File 964 and House File 966, respectively, which all advanced out of subcommittee hearings with bipartisan support.
What the legislation's fate would be in the Senate is "anybody's guess," said Rep. Christian Hermanson, R-Mason City, but he believed "good tax policy is always a priority in the Legislature."
