For 20 years, NASAHubble has been studying Uranus... and learning more about its gas. Uranus' atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and helium, with a small amount of methane—but that methane gives Uranus its distinctive cyan color. Our orbiting Hubble telescope studied Uranus between 2002 and 2022 and found that unlike other gas giants, Uranus has much less methane near its poles. Hubble also tracked complex circulation patterns in the planet's atmosphere, giving scientists a deeper look into Uranus. This classic image of Uranus was taken not by Hubble, but by NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft as it flew by the planet on Jan. 14, 1986.
