Tariffs - the most taboo of topics currently, and I’m gonna talk about it.
Long story short:
tariff = sales tax
import = buyer
export = seller
Just like in any sales transaction, the buyer is responsible for paying the sales tax, then that sales tax is given directly to the government.
In the case of tariffs, the importer (or the buyer) pays the tax. So if America places a 20% tariff on imported goods from China, it is the American company BUYING those goods that is responsible for paying the tariff.
Let me know in the comments if this was an easier explanation than what’s currently on the internet, because I swear they’re making it sound more complicated than it is.
If you want a part 2 about how tariffs can be BOTH good AND bad for American consumers let me know!
