Eleven years after his last major win and 14 years on from his so-called ‘meltdown’ at Augusta, Rory McIlroy can finally call himself a Masters champion. The 35-year-old is just the sixth player to accomplish the career grand slam.
After taking the lead with a birdie on 17, McIlroy missed his par putt on 18 to force a playoff with Justin Rose. McIlroy made sure the redo of 18 ended differently. After clinching the win, McIlroy fell to his knees in relief amid raucous applause. During the green jacket ceremony and in interviews after the dramatic round, McIlroy was overcome with emotion when thanking his wife and daughter and discussing the sacrifices his parents, who were watching from home in Northern Ireland, made to help him achieve his dreams.
