Good Afternoon, Friends, Today is National Dolphin Day! A special day to commemorate one of the smartest mammals in the world. Dolphins are social, intelligent, and friendly creatures, closely related to whales and porpoises, and emotionally, very much like humans. There are some 42 species of dolphins and seven species of porpoises. Some dolphins prefer the shallow waters of the shores, while others live and play further out in the open ocean. There are five River Dolphin species that live in the waterways of Asia and South America. Orcas are the only dolphins who live in the Arctic and Antarctic, thanks in no small part to their immense size, which protects them from the frigid temperatures at the poles. Dolphins are marine mammals, with their pregnancies lasting between nine and sixteen months, and their young drinking milk.
