Our cofounders paulnicklen and mitty had always dreamed of sailing around the world. They wanted to bring SeaLegacy’s headquarters directly to the front lines of ocean conservation—and in 2019, they did. It was a tricky project to take on. Boat traffic drives major carbon emissions, and they couldn’t help the ocean aboard a gas-guzzling machine in good conscience. So they turned to sustainable sailing—an often-overlooked climate solution—and found a custom-built, 62-foot catamaran in New Zealand, designed for a near-zero carbon footprint. After months of outfitting it for storytelling at sea, SeaLegacy 1 was born. Since then, SeaLegacy 1 has carried our team across thousands of nautical miles—from The Bahamas to the Galápagos, Baja to French Polynesia, New Zealand to Australia, and now Indonesia.
