Amedeo Modigliani is famous for his striking portraits of figures with elongated features and almond-shaped eyes. We’re proud to have 11 of his paintings and one of his sculptures on view in our East Building. Modigliani grew up in a Sephardic Jewish family in Tuscany, during a period when Italian society was generally accepting of Jews. In 1906, he moved to Paris to live among fellow artists, and he was stunned by the overt antisemitism he encountered.
