The farthest humans have ever been from Earth.
From their lunar module, the Apollo 13 astronauts took photos
#OTD in 1970 as they looped past the far side of the Moon, setting the record for the farthest humans have ever been from the Earth: 248,655 miles (~400,000 km).
To conserve their limited remaining power, the Apollo 13 crew was instructed to power down all non-essential systems, including the heater of the lunar module, which served as their “lifeboat” as they made their way back to Earth. Temperatures reached a frigid 38°F (3°C) inside the lunar module, and sleep was nearly impossible.
Image description: The crew of Apollo 13 photographed the Moon from their Lunar Module “lifeboat” as they passed by it. The shut-down Command Module is visible out the overhead rendezvous window on the right. Crater Chaplygin, a feature of the far side of the Moon, is the major feature shown on the lunar surface.
