Monica Singleton has set out to change how the media portrays “The Great Outdoors.” 🌲
Monica is a filmmaker, director and Storyblocks Re: Stock partner. In 2020, she produced a stock footage collection for us that depicted Black women exploring the outdoors through activities like hiking, swimming and backpacking. This collection was inspired by Monica’s personal love for the outdoors, but even more-so, the lack of diversity and representation the media portrays in this type of content.
This collection inspired her to create her first film project, Outer Soul – a short film documentary about Black hikers that follows the story of a man from Baltimore who prepares to hike the Appalachian trail.
Monica’s inspiring journey through film encompasses one of the core messages of our Re: Stock initiative: We all deserve to see ourselves in the content we consume.
Until all communities feel seen and represented in media, there is still work to be done.
