A long-standing Poly Royal tradition from 1934 to 1988 was the crowning of the Poly Royal Queen and Princesses. Between 1930 and 1955, women were not allowed to enroll at Cal Poly, so the Poly Royal court was selected from the local community, high schools, and other universities. The 1956-57 school year marked the first time a Cal Poly student was crowned queen, Val deGeus, an elementary education major. In 1988 the practice was discontinued and instead, six students were selected as Poly Royal ambassadors.
