The driver charged with killing Children's Hospital of Philadelphia chief resident Dr. Barbara Friedes has pleaded guilty, according to court documents.
Friedes, 30, was riding her bike in the bike lane on Spruce Street headed westbound on July 17, 2024, when a man — later identified as Michael Vahey — struck her with his vehicle, according to police.
Vahey, 69, pleaded guilty to multiple charges including vehicular homicide, DUI and involuntary manslaughter, a docket filed in a Philadelphia court shows.
Friedes' death spurred advocacy for better protections for cyclists in the city, with many bikers saying Spruce Street needs concrete barriers.
