I used to feel so self-conscious boarding early. I’d feel eyes on me like… “Why is she going first?” What they don’t see is the mental checklist I’m running through: ✅What if I don’t hear the announcement? ✅What if I miss a safety instruction? ✅What if I bump someone and don’t realize it? Pre-boarding isn’t about skipping the line. It’s about giving myself time and space to advocate, communicate, and be safe. What I do when I get on the plane early: •Let the flight crew know I’m deaf/hard of hearing and what seat I’m in •Request visual communication •Identify the exits and layout •Avoid the anxiety of navigating a full plane alone Invisible disability doesn’t mean no disability. It doesn’t mean I’m “taking advantage.” It means I have needs that deserve to be met—just like anyone else. So no, I don’t feel guilty anymore.
