If you ask any of the talented goaltenders that I’ve had the honor of working with what is a skill that I say is the hardest to acquire, they will all undoubtedly say “Knowing when to move and how much to move.” As I have stated many times before, I think the greatest learning and potential for growth comes from looking at the most difficult situations and the earned goals against. Tonight, I want look at two goals against on traffic situations against two of my favorite goaltenders to watch, Andrej Vasilevskiy and Jake Oettinger. One thing you will notice on both situations is that both goaltenders are in great position prior to the shot release. As you will see in the videos and the frame by frame shot, both goaltenders end up outside of the net after the shots hit traffic and kick out into the slot.
