Ernesto Olvera, a Visalia resident, has been fighting a rare autoimmune disease known as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) since December.
The condition has left him paralyzed from the waist down and reliant on a ventilator.
Olvera has been treated in four different hospitals recently, with his latest admission to a Los Angeles hospital occurring on Wednesday.
His daughter, Steph Alonzo, explained the family's immediate goal is to strengthen Olvera enough to leave the hospital and begin a new medication called Vyvgart, which is specifically for CIDP patients.
"He needs another medication. It's called Vyvgart. It's a new medication for people with CIDP. He's approved for it but he's only approved as an outpatient," said Alonzo.
The family faces a significant financial challenge, needing $80,000 to cover the cost of the medication. Due to Olvera's Medicare plan, they are unable to bill Medicare Part B for the treatment.
