The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office was called to the 5400 block of 19th Street East in Cottondale around 3 a.m., where deputies found a 39-year-old man dead in his vehicle. The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit took over the investigation and learned the victim, Darnell Witherspoon, had been staying at the home with his girlfriend and several of her children. After speaking with witnesses and processing the scene investigators determined the victim and his girlfriend's son had been involved in an argument that resulted in the victim's shooting. Because the victim was inside his vehicle at the time he was shot and killed, the suspect has been charged with capital murder. The suspect is not being identified in accordance with Alabama law because he is younger than 18.
