When I heard Bad Fat Black Girl was being released in 2021, I immediately pre-ordered the book. I didn’t know anything about Sesali Bowen’s work but that title embodied all of the things I aspired to be. This book felt more memoir than feminist manifiesto but I loved it all the same. As a fat Black 20-somethings who loves rap music, I felt affirmed and seen by the many experiences Bowen shared. Rap music is often demonized and critiqued for its raunchy themes and boomin beats but there are often principles to live by too.
