šŸ“š BOOK REVIEW: The Monsters We Defy by Leslye Penelope šŸ’ Rating: 4.5 Stars ā­ļø Related note: I recommended this book for my local book club pals and EVERYONE SAID THEY ENJOYED IT! I WON 🤭 Now the review: As my introduction to Penelope’s work, this book did not disappoint! I really loved the way she was able to show history in this story. The setting was set very well and the dialogue was both fun and authentic. Penelope did her research and it shows! I also REALLY loved how she made prominent Black characters, who sometime seem larger than life, more familiar and human. I enjoyed the characters - Zelda and Jessie Lee were RIDERS. The romance and intimacy, although clean, were everything. I have only two minor gripes with this book 1) the reveal for Clara’s charm was a little anticlimactic 2) the ā€œsolutionā€ to the final fight scene was a tad confusing as it seemed a little abrupt BUT I will say if they did this scene in a movie, it would’ve been perfectly done.
