✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨ When We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Banwo's debut follows Yejide and Darwin in Trinidad as they navigate love and loss, literally and ideologically. The story is described as a mythical love story, which is technically true, but the romance is more of a subplot. The death these characters experience are at the forefront and guide the story to its end. When the love does arrive, it is instantaneous. It is immediate - truly love at first sight. I enjoyed the way the characters were able to lean on each other and understand each other in so little time. I loved the dialogue in this story and my favorite exchange happens in the last 70 pages. It states: Yejide: "Don't you have hard things? Things you worry would change everything, if someone knew?" Darwin: "Well, Life full of those.
