On this day in 1983, the world-renowned author Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Color Purple, making her the first Black woman to receive this honor. The novel was later adapted into a critically acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg in 1985, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, and subsequently, a Broadway play.
