The draw to Antarctica is multifaceted. Part of its allure lies in the history of near-total inaccessibility. What is it really like in such a remote place? The assumption that it's just one vast white canvas is quickly shattered by its staggering diversity in terrain, texture, weather, and its own surreal spectrum of colour. Among its most captivating natural wonders are the blue ice tunnels, visible only in the earliest part of the summer season. Carved by meltwater from previous summers and lit by refracted sunlight, their walls glow in vivid shades of turquoise, electric blue, and violet. But they are fleeting. As the season warms, the ice softens, and within just two weeks, the tunnels become inaccessible again. This rare phenomenon is reserved for those who travel to Antarctica early in the season, between October and November.
