The State Cemetery and Funeral Bureau has ordered Fresno's Chapel of the Light to halt its cemetery operations, citing unlicensed activity as a threat to public health, welfare, and safety. The bureau fined the establishment $5,000 for operating without a valid license, which expired on March 31, 2024. Business owner Buck Kamphausen told Fox 26 News that he transferred control of the cemetery to Evergreen Ministries, asserting that it is now a church cemetery and thus exempt from state control. However, the state disagreed, ruling that Evergreen does not qualify for an exemption and ordering Chapel of the Light to cease its cemetery business. An additional fine of $2,500 was imposed. Kamphausen, who has been in the cemetery business for over 50 years, described the situation as "a nightmare."
