Universal Zoo In the early days of Universal City, a large zoo was one of its main attractions. Home to animals featured in Universal films, the zoo was a novelty for guests and, in 1915, was the largest privately owned menagerie in the United States. It was located on the backlot, in the area now between the Courthouse Square and Park Lake. In 1967, a smaller petting zoo opened as part of the new theme park.
