No one expected cemeteries to help save the planet.
But in Valencia, Spain, they are.
Faced with the challenge of expanding clean energy without harming natural spaces, the city launched Requiem in Power—a groundbreaking project turning five cemeteries into solar farms. Nearly 7,000 solar panels are being installed to power city buildings and more than 1,000 vulnerable households.
Instead of cutting down forests or building on precious land, they chose quiet, underused spaces and gave them a new purpose.
It’s a bold reminder: sustainability isn’t just about what we do, but how we do it.
