This March, Butterfly Pavilion returned to Tanzania, Africa to continue our vital efforts for the Bees for Elephants project. Bees for Elephants is one of several global conservation initiatives led by Butterfly Pavilion. Through this project, we partner with local communities and organizations to help mitigate human-elephant conflict and protect both people and wildlife. By stringing together beehives occupied by African honey bees to form an innovative “living fence,” we use elephants’ natural fear of bees to help keep them away from areas where people live or grow crops. When an elephant encounters the fence, the bees emerge from their hives and swarm the animal, causing enough discomfort to drive it away. Elephants, known for their intelligence and strong memories, quickly learn to avoid these areas and rarely return.
