The Johnston Community School District appears to be the first in the Des Moines metro to discuss whether to remove gender identity from its nondiscrimination policies. But it likely won't be the last.
The discussion at a school board meeting April 21 was in response to a new Iowa law that removes gender identity as a protected class, effective July 1. It's also in response to President Donald Trump's administration, which has used litigation and threats to cut federal funds and school lunch funding at public schools that have transgender-inclusive policies, especially in school athletics.
