Singer Dana International, a pioneer of Israel’s LGBTQ community, will light an Independence Day torch next week. Dana, a trans woman, trailblazer and Israeli cultural icon, will carry the torch in the name of tolerance - and takes the pride to the most important stage. When on the same stage also dark voices will be heard - Dana will echo a voice of freedom, of visibility, of pride and of hope. In a statement accompanying her decision, she has said she “hopes we’re doing the right thing, and I want to see up close who this Shapiro is” — referring to the US pundit, who has expressed anti-LGBTQ views. “You have known me for so many years,” she wrote, “I’ve never done anything in order to be liked.
