This isn’t just a portrait—it’s a family story.
Model naimamora has vivid memories of visiting her grandmother’s studio in Cuernavaca, Mexico. She remembers African violets in every corner, the scent of terracotta clay, and walls of prints bursting with color and pattern. But what she remembers most is her grandmother’s strong presence.
Naima’s grandmother was none other than the legendary sculptor and printmaker Elizabeth Catlett—known for using her art to celebrate the beauty of her heritage.
Inspired by her grandmother’s legacy, Naima partnered with Baltimore artist latoyahobbs to reimagine one of Catlett’s sculptures as a woodblock print—one of the oldest forms of printmaking. Hobbs began by sketching Naima’s face onto a block of wood, then carefully carved the image by hand.
