Happy #InternationalFlamingoDay 🦩 Your Toronto Zoo is filled with many vibrant residents and among them, is the American Flamingo species which we celebrate 🦩 Fun Fact! Were you aware that flamingos are actually born grey? Flamingos are pink as a result of beta carotene, an orange-red pigment that is found in algae and brine shrimp which they consume as part of their diet. Their species happen to be one of the largest species of flamingo. Found in the Caribbean and along the northern coast of South America, these extraordinarily social birds live in flocks that sometimes number in the thousands! 🪶 Compared with its long legs, a flamingo's feet are relatively small. The front three toes are webbed, and the back toe is either tiny or missing altogether. Flamingos walk easily and can run if and when they feel threatened.
