Leon Poindexter visited the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum this week and met with some of our staff! He is a master shipwright who rebuilt the tall ship HMS Rose (to turn her into HMS Surprise) for the movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. The film stars Russell Crowe.
This was a major rebuild, which changed the shape of the stern, removed deck structures, fitted new fighting tops and a figurehead, and rigged all new sails, with a budget of around $4 million.
He served as a historical consultant for the studio and was in the movie too!
