🌿 In the Bribri ancestry, the tapir did not come from the forest. She IS the forest.
To the Bribri People of Costa Rica, the tapir—danta, naĩ—is a legend. She is kin. A bearer of memory. A keeper of medicine. A bridge between people and the living land.
Today, Baird’s Tapirs are Endangered— and deeply intertwined with the health of ecosystems and cultures across Mesoamerica. They carve paths through dense forest, dispersing seeds and shaping their forests with every step. They are gardeners of the wild. And for those who’ve lived alongside them for generations, they are family.
At Re:wild, we work through the bairdstapir (Baird’s Tapir Survival Alliance) and with local partners in Costa Rica to protect these gentle giants—combining Indigenous knowledge, scientific research, and community-led conservation to safeguard the forests that still remember her name.
