The 2026 fiscal year General Fund Budget that was adopted by the Council last year projected expenditures of just more than $296 million. Current projections from a Budget & Finance Committee meeting April 24, however, anticipated expenditures of up to $316 million. Sharon Friedrichsen, Berkeley budget manager, said the overshoot was likely a result of increased salaries for city workers, $10 million paid in overtime work and a decrease in the amount of expected savings from salaries. Additionally, all of the 134 currently vacant positions totaling $26.2 million were also factored into the budget.
