Have you ever hiked near Tom’s Thumb and wondered how all those large rock formations got there? 🪨🌵
Over 500,000 years ago, one of Arizona’s largest landslides occurred on the East End of the McDowell Mountains. This was the Marcus Landslide — a debris flow that reached speeds of up to 44 mph and moved enough earth material to fill six football stadiums! The landslide transported several hundred boulders that weighed anywhere from 170 pounds to 2.4M pounds.
You can hike the very grounds of this slide mass on The Marcus Landslide Trail. It is located in the southern portion of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve, leaving from the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead. A 3.9-mile moderately challenging out-and-back trail, The Marcus Landslide Trail takes you through a maze of jumbled boulders that took such an abrupt journey eons ago.
