Notre Dame de Paris is one of the most widely recognized symbols of France and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Completed around 1260, it is considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. On April 15, 2019, the cathedral's roof caught fire, and the world watched helplessly as French firefighters fought to save it. Despite their efforts, the 800-year-old timber frame structure supporting the roof above the stone-vaulted ceiling was destroyed. The timber roof structure is known as "la forêt" (the forest) because of the 1,300 oak trees needed for its completion.
