On Monday, April 28th, Amherst College men’s ice hockey coach Jack Arena announced his retirement after 42 years.
Arena, a native of Randolph, MA, took over the bench for his alma mater just five months after his graduation in 1983. He was fresh off winning the Hobey Baker Award as the best player in Division III during his senior season and became the longest-tenured coach in any sport in the
#NESCAC.
Arena leaves the Mammoths after accumulating 537 wins in 41 seasons, good for 12th among
#D3 coaches and 26th by any men’s ice hockey in the
#NCAA. His teams won two
#ECAC championships (1992, 1996), three NESCAC championships (2009, 2012, 2015) and advanced to the Division III Frozen Four twice (2009, 2015).
On top of the team accolades, Arena was named the
#AHCA National Coach of the Year twice as well as the NESCAC Coach of the Year three times. When he represented the purple and white as a player, Arena amassed 140 Points which has him sitting as the fourth all-time leading scorer...
