He is the first Derby contender for 32-year-old Ethan West, a native of Cambridge City, Indiana. He went out on his own as a trainer in 2018 and secured his first graded stakes victory in the 2023 GIII Bryan Station Stakes at Keeneland with Runaway Storm. Chunk of Gold drew post position 19 and will have Jareth Loveberry, who rode in his first Derby in 2023, aboard for the big race on Saturday.
