Despite the rain and cloudy skies, staff at 18 Des Moines Public Schools walked into work together for International Workers Day and to make a statement about education cuts, including those made by the Trump administration.
Nationally, public school staff are looking for ways to say "enough is enough" and want politicians to stop attacking students and schools, said Iowa State Education Association President Josh Brown to the small group gathered at 7 a.m. May 1 outside Carver Community School.
Brown has visited about 150 classrooms over the course of the 2024-25 school year and said, in his experience, public school staff remain devoted to their students despite the upheaval.
The formal gathering lasted about five minutes before staff headed inside to start the day. desmoinespublicschools Superintendent Ian Roberts and Des Moines Education Association President Anne Cross attended several of the gatherings.
