The antidote to outrage culture…
Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt says we’ve moved on from “they’re wrong” to “they’re evil,”or “they’re disgusting.” And once we feel disgust, we don’t want to debate — we want to cut people off completely. That kind of mindset is spreading fast. And if politics starts to feel like one big moral war, who’s going to want to stay in it?
So what’s the antidote? It’s not more arguing — it’s connection. Haidt says the opposite of disgust isn’t logic, it’s love. Not the cheesy kind, but the kind that grows from real relationships. You can hate a group… until you meet someone in it and realize they’re human, kind, or even lovely.
Maybe the most powerful political move right now is getting to know someone you were taught to avoid.
