Happy World Tuna Day! This massive school of tuna was captured off the coast of the Galápagos Islands. Tuna are known to travel in schools up to 30 kilometers wide. These warm-blooded apex predators can dive deep in search of prey and swim at speeds up to 43 kilometers per hour. Highly migratory, some species travel thousands of kilometers across entire oceans. World Tuna Day was established by the unitednations to highlight the urgent need for sustainable tuna fisheries. Since then, real progress has been made. More tuna fisheries are becoming responsibly managed, and tuna populations are showing some signs of recovery. It’s a great example of what’s possible when scientists, fishers, and managers work together—not at odds, but in partnership—to support a sustainable future. But the fight is far from over.
