Right-wing Reform UK wins by-election beating Labour
Right-wing Reform UK have won the Runcorn and Helsby by-election, beating Labour by six votes.
A by-election is an election that takes place if a seat in Parliament becomes vacant between one General Election and the next.
The Runcorn and Helsby by-election was triggered by the resignation of Labour MP Mike Amesbury, who was convicted earlier this year of assaulting a constituent.
Reform have also won the Greater Lincolnshire mayoralty, making gains across the country’s local election.
This is Keir Starmer's first major electoral test as prime minister since being elected as leader in July 2024.
The Conservative Party lost 10 seats and Labour lost 12, with Reform UK gaining 23.
