A lot of times, we get so lost amidst the piles of forlorn queer stories that, in despair, we often end up dismissing the simple ecstasy of the love that did exist. Alongside fear and suffering resides the safety of belonging to someone in trying times, and the hope for a shared and simpler future. This is especially evident in war letters. It’s treacherous to write love letters as queer individuals during war, with unfathomable consequences, but it’s also a source of steadfastness. The very mundane tendency to keep holding onto love despite everything isn’t situational. It’s rare to come across these letters, as it’s often wiser to destroy them, but again, people hold on and safeguard their love. Their desires remain preserved in time, increasingly viewed in a more tender light.
