It seems like the offseason acquisition of redshirt junior defensive end transfer Deante McCray doesn’t get the credit that it deserves. Fellow pass rusher James Williams gets more of the discussion, where he will be reunited with defensive coordinator Tony White and defensive line coach Terrance Knighton from the Nebraska Cornhuskers. However, McCray recorded 59 tackles (three for loss) and 2.5 sacks during the 2024 season for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. The Jacksonville (FL) native has the frame to be successful in the defense at 6’4” and 274 pounds. Just like Williams, I believe that McCray is just scratching the surface of coming into his own at defensive end. I realize that many in the fan base don’t want to hype up the duo because of what happened last year with Patrick Payton and Marvin Jones Jr., but this defense wants to be aggressive and get after the passer.
