JFK’s grandson and Mike Pence: divided by politics, united by principle.
It’s easy — and tempting — to reduce politics to a fight between good guys and bad guys. But moments like these from Jack Schlossberg and former Vice President Mike Pence, who received the JFK Profile in Courage Award for his actions on January 6, remind us that democracy is sustained not by agreement, but by commitment. Commitment to the Constitution. Commitment to peaceful transitions of power. Commitment to show up even when we disagree.
Schlossberg pointed out his differing views with Pence to highlight that democracy relies on shared values and courage, not the same stances. Pence called Jan. 6 a tragedy turned triumph because leaders from both sides returned that same day to finish democracy’s work.
In times of uncertainty, let’s look to moments like these as a reminder that democracy isn’t a given. It’s something we must all actively work to preserve, no matter our political affiliations.
