An artist transformed discarded tires clogging landfills into this extraordinary sculpture.
Her name is Chakaia Booker—a New York-based artist who salvages tires and keeps them from entering landfills, where they trap and emit methane gas.
This sculpture spans about 20 feet and features a mass of curled bands of tire rubber, some interspersed with spiky shards, coiled strips, and loops made from inner tubes. Through Booker’s creativity, industrial waste becomes spectacular art.
Experience this jaw-dropping sculpture in our East Building exhibition, “In the Tower,” now on view.
