If you’re travelling pretty much anywhere this year, you might need an ETA, EES or ETIAS. It can get pretty complicated so we’ve tried to break it down. The ETA, or Electronic Travel Authorisation, is a digital permission to travel to the UK, required by non-visa nationals for short visits, and is not a visa or tax. The ETA is live as of April 2nd 2025. ETIAS is a new travel authorisation system for non-EU travellers visiting Europe. This is sceduled to go live sometime towards the end of 2026. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated IT system that the European Union (EU) will use to register non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay each time they cross the external borders of the 29 European countries using the system.
