The shop is the oldest reptile store in the United States, originally founded in Oakland; it has since moved to four locations and has remained in Berkeley since 1989. John Emberton, an owner of the Vivarium who has worked there for 35 years, said he has seen many rare animals hatch, but this is the first conjoined snake he has encountered that has lived beyond a few hours. “We’ve hatched two-headed geckos. We’ve hatched two-headed tortoises. We’ve hatched two-headed other snakes that just don’t live more than an hour or two out of the egg,” Emberton said. “I’ve had animals that were born more perfectly formed than this animal that didn’t live a day, and here this animal is chugging along, doing great.” Emberton said conjoined twinning occurs across all animal species, from humans to reptiles, but many do not live for long.
